Names to Know: Alexander Payne

 Alexander-Payne

Recently re-watching a bunch of his movies, it dawned on me that a lot of people don’t know the name Alexander Payne; and it really Payned me to realize that. Did you see what I did there? Huh? Pretty clever. But nowhere near the cleverness of this gentleman who has captured human life to its funniest and rawest in all his movies. For sure at the near top of the list of my favorite directors, I’m glad to have a platform on Goombas Gone Wild to share his work and his name with you. As the self proclaimed Alberta movie guru and contributing movie writer on this site, I want to bring you some features on filmmakers to brighten your horizon and maybe pass along some good film recommendations to you as well. Maybe you’ve heard a name and never seen a film of theirs or you’ve seen many but never realized who made it; let Names to Know be your guide to good movies and Hollywood knowledge.

10 Other Most Anticipated Movies of 2015

Movies

Now that were really into the swing of things for 2015 movie releases and summer blockbusters are right around the corner, the most anticipated movies of the year start to appear on the big screen for us to enjoy. And yes, like most recent years there is a long list of special effect ridden adventures like the second Avengers movie, Disney’s Tomorrowland, and the 4th installment of Jurassic Park. Then there’s Star Wars: Force Awakens which no doubt in my mind will become the biggest movie of all time. But there are a few smaller movies you might not have heard about or have slipped past your radar. They might not have a built in franchise (Well, one kind of did) but they will no doubt cause a stir at the box office and maybe rack up a few awards next Oscar season. Here are my top picks of what looks interesting that people don’t seem to know. Continue reading

Manners Maketh Man

Kingsman

“We are an independent international intelligence agency operating at                               the highest level of discretion. The Kingsmen agents are the new knights.” Galahad

As I sit in the theater watching Kingsmen: The Secret Service for the second time, (I say “second time” because for me that’s a huge thing to do. I couldn’t tell you the last movie I saw twice in the theater. I just don’t do that) I find myself looking around at everyone in the theater trying to get a glimpse of their reactions. I was hoping to see everyone loving the movie as much as I did because I truly think Kingsmen: The Secret Service is a new age spy-movie masterpiece. Continue reading

The Rise and Fall and Rise and Maybe Fall Again of Tim Burton

download (4)

The big movie out now is Disney’s live action version of Cinderella. It’s certainly not the first time an animated Disney classic has got the real life treatment. Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty (Maleficent), and Snow White have all recently been brought to life with grand sets and A list actors. The Jungle Book is next in line with Bill Murray as Baloo which right now could be a tossup as hilarious or extremely unnecessary. But then there’s the king of the adaption and remake Tim Burton who reportedly just agreed to do a live action version of Dumbo. Continue reading

Is the Fresh Prince Still King?

will-smith-2011-a-p

I’m going to blow everyone’s minds and start out by saying I don’t like Will Smith. Never have, since he always typically plays the same characters that are bent on saving the world in some CGI kind of way. Not to mention the fact in every interview he refers to the release of his movies as “Big Willy Weekends” that will surely gross over 100 million dollars because people love him so much. Ryan Uytdewilligen’s Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2014

You don’t know me, I don’t know you, but one thing I do know is movies. Every year I like making a top ten list, and so may I present to you my favorites of 2014. Some may not have even been released in Lethbridge yet, some are probably readily available to rent of buy. Either way, check them out or use it a basis for movies you might like to see.

  1. Jersey Boys

This Clint Eastwood directed musical is a bit of a wild card for this list, but it tells the story of the 1960’s band Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. If you like their singing, you’ll love the movie. The only way I can describe the film is it’s basically Goodfellas as a musical.

  1. Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise is good again with this sci-fi version of Groundhog Day. The action sequences are killer, literally, as he dies in hundreds of scenes. But it’s refreshing to see a clever action movie without a built in franchise that happens to be really suspenseful and at times hilarious. Continue reading

Saturday Night Live’s 40th Anniversary Special

Word’s cannot describe how excited I was for this special, I mean I’ve been watching the show faithfully for at least twelve years and I at one time owned every single Best Of DVD you see in those bargain bins at movie stores. The kickoff seasons in the 1970’s are of course the very best and I assure you they hold up even today, but there have been a long list of hilarious moments over the years featuring some of the best minds in comedy like Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey. So I made myself some spinach dip, opened a bottle of wine, and watched the stars pour out for an anniversary forty years in the making.
